For nearly a century, the Bridgewater Historical Society has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of one of Connecticut's most treasured small towns. Founded in 1928 by descendants of Bridgewater's earliest families, the Society continues its mission to collect, protect, and celebrate the people, places, and stories that have shaped our community for generations.

The Story of the Historical Society-
Our story begins in 1928 when a group of citizens came together to bring to life the vibrant history of the town. The Society had its original home in the basement of the Burnham Library. Throughout the early 20th century its leadership hosted teas, mounted exhibits and educated visitors on the history of the town. By the 1950’s both the library and the Historical Society had outgrown their space. A deal was struck and the Library Association agreed to move the Captains House from its location on the Keeler Farm to its current location in 1961. This building would serve as a new home for the Historical Society.
By the late 1960’s, with the nation’s bicentennial on the horizon, the society realized the need for an expanded space. Thankfully, an opportunity came when the Town of Bridgewater purchased the adjacent 1820 Elijah Peck house. The organization was given the use of the home for their ever-expanding collection. The added space created new opportunities to host lectures, exhibit more artifacts, and welcome the community.
In 2026, the Society embarked on an exciting new chapter by reimagining the Peck House and transforming its collection into a vibrant museum, where artifacts, photographs, and stories come together to reveal Bridgewater's rich history.
